Thanks to my husband’s research trip (for a book he’s writing) and to frequent flyer miles, I was recently able to go to Ireland for a week. It was, at the very least, one of the best trips of my life. While in Kilkenny for the weekend, we toured the town’s castle, built in 1192. With Andrew lost in the castle’s art collection, I struck up a conversation with their conservator, who was restoring two very old frames at the end of the gallery. A question about thatched-roof cottages led to an invitation to her house in the countryside for dinner!
I am so grateful to have met Sue and hope that we stay in touch for a very long time. She’s super talented and was just hired by the Tate Britain Museum; had I been there two weeks later, our paths never would have crossed. And when I say it was a magical night, nothing short of fairies landing on my shoulder could have made it any more so. Here’s a look at my brief but memorable time in Ballycallan with our new friends….

After our post-dinner walk, Sue went into her backyard and came back with these from her greenhouse!
